Think Dutch cannabis and Amsterdam probably comes to mind first. But head north to Groningen and you'll find a city taking part in something pretty significant. It's one of ten Dutch municipalities involved in the regulated cannabis supply experiment. And according to a September report from the Trimbos Institute, participating coffeeshops are now offering a wider range of cannabis products. More flower, more hash, more variety. The old menu has been getting some attention.
The research also found that products such as edibles, concentrates and vapes have become more common across the trial. That doesn't mean every coffeeshop in Groningen stocks them. The findings cover all ten participating municipalities. Cannabis is supplied by approved private growers, with quality checks and product information requirements. It's a different approach from the traditional Dutch system, where retail sales were tolerated but supply remained illegal.
For international visitors, there's an important distinction. This is an experiment, not nationwide cannabis legalisation. The first results are interesting, but researchers say more evidence is needed to understand the long-term effects. Still, Groningen is helping write a new chapter of Dutch coffeeshop culture. And you don't need to visit Amsterdam to see that story unfold.
