Posdnous doesn't smoke. That doesn't stop the weed stories finding him. In a new High Times interview, he remembers watching Maseo smoke, eat THC ice cream and apply THC balm. At that point, you'd almost want to ask whether there's a loyalty card. Maseo reckons he and weed have been getting along for more than thirty years. Pos seems perfectly happy to leave that relationship to his bandmate.
There were boundaries, though. Maseo kept his cannabis out of De La Soul's studio because the others weren't fans of the smell. Pos says he's occasionally felt light-headed while sitting around people smoking. His latest example involves B-Real from Cypress Hill. They were together during promotion for Cabin in the Sky when B-Real lit up. Pos knew what was coming. That's how he remembers it, anyway. No joint required on his side of the conversation.
There's also an album to celebrate. Stakes Is High turned thirty this year. Back in 1996, De La Soul used that record to take a hard look at what was happening to hip-hop. The anniversary edition arrived on October 23, complete with a previously unheard J Dilla remix. Dave, their late bandmate, isn't here for this one. He died in 2023. Posdnous and Maseo are keeping his work in circulation, sharing memories of the records and the years they spent making them. Including, apparently, some fairly memorable cannabis moments.
