Canadian weed is crossing the Atlantic to Britain

Canada has plenty of weed. Britain could use some. Canadian cannabis company Canopy Growth is bringing four strains to the UK market. Doctor's prescription required, though.

The Brits have tea. The Canadians have weed. And soon, a little more of the latter will be making its way across the Atlantic. On September 22, Canopy Growth announced plans to supply four medical cannabis strains to the UK, with British company GROW Group handling sales and distribution. The products will be sold under the Spectrum Therapeutics name.

Don't expect Amsterdam-style scenes popping up across London. This is prescription cannabis, not something you can casually pick up at a shop on your lunch break. For Canopy Growth, it's another chance to expand its business in Europe. The cannabis is grown in Canada, and the company's Ontario growing facility has renewed its European quality certification. That matters when you're dealing with medical cannabis. Growing a plant is one thing. Getting it across a border as medicine is a whole different headache.

Canopy Growth hasn't said exactly which four strains are coming or when British patients will be able to get them. What is clear is that the company wants to grow beyond Canada. For patients in Britain, the deal could mean more choice. Whether those choices will be affordable is another story. Funny how that part never seems to make the press release.
