You'd probably expect Snoop Dogg, Cypress Hill or Afroman on a list of big weed songs. Billboard did things a little differently for April 20, 2026. It looked at hits with words such as ‘high’, ‘smoke’ and ‘stoned’ in the title, then ranked them by their Hot 100 chart history. That's how The 5th Dimension's ‘Stoned Soul Picnic’ ended up at number one, with Musical Youth's ‘Pass the Dutchie’ at number ten. This isn't a vote for the best songs to smoke to. It's about what happened on the charts.
And that number ten has a funny backstory. Musical Youth released ‘Pass the Dutchie’ in 1982, taking their cue from The Mighty Diamonds' ‘Pass the Kouchie’. The older song was about cannabis. The younger group's version wasn't allowed to be. So the ‘kouchie’, a pipe for smoking weed, became a ‘dutchie’, a cooking pot. They took the drug references out, but more than forty years later people still bring up the song when they're talking about weed.
Billboard kept the door open for other meanings, too. If a singer used ‘high’ to describe falling in love, that could still count. So don't expect every track in the top 25 to be about rolling a joint. The list is more of a trip through pop history, with a few cannabis connections along the way. And it shows how a word in a song can mean something completely different once it leaves the studio.
