Amsterdam Never Sleeps. Its Coffeeshops Still Close by 1 AM

Amsterdam's nightlife might keep going, but its coffeeshops won't be getting extra late-night hours. The city has confirmed that 1 AM remains the closing limit.

Amsterdam has a reputation for staying up late. Bars, clubs, packed streets and people who clearly forgot what bedtime means. But coffeeshops? Different story. The city has confirmed that they can only operate between 7 AM and 1 AM. So if you're visiting Amsterdam and planning a late-night stop, keep an eye on the clock.

The decision was published on October 19 and took effect the following day. Changes to the city's hospitality regulations could otherwise have allowed longer opening hours at certain locations. Amsterdam's mayor decided that coffeeshops should keep their existing limits. City officials point to public safety and the impact of customers coming and going, particularly in residential areas.

For tourists, there's no dramatic new crackdown here. Coffeeshops aren't being forced to close earlier than before. They're simply not getting extra hours. And remember, 1 AM is the maximum, not a promise that every shop will stay open that late. Amsterdam's nightlife still has plenty of energy. Just don't expect every coffeeshop to join the afterparty.
